Departamento de Geología

From the academic year 2013/14 the Department of Geology has a new PhD Programme in "Biogeosciences" (RD 99/2011), which is developed jointly with the Department of Biology of Organisms and Systems. Also remain active previous Doctoral programs called "GEOLOGY" (regulated by R.D. 1393/2007 y R.D. 99/2011). 

PhD studies

PhD studies are intended to provide students with an advanced training in research techniques. They may include courses, seminars and other activities aimed at research training, and they will include the preparation and presentation of the corresponding doctoral thesis, which consist of an orginal research work. Once the students have succesfully completed these studies, they will obtain a PhD degree, which is the highest possible recognition in higher education, certifies the highest academic rak and entitles its holder to teach and carry out research, according to the current legislation. 

The University of Oviedo offers 37 PhD Programmes adapted to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). These studies comprise a training period and a research period.

The teaching period of PhD Programmes of the University of Oviedo corresponds to a Master's Degree. The entry requirements, enrollment, development, ect., of the teaching period are those of the chosen official master's programme

The admission to the research period is carried out independently. Therefore, all the information related to PhD studies herein contained refers to the research period of PhD studies and it mainly comprises the preparation and presentation of the doctoral thesis. 

PhD Programme in Biogeosciences

The PhD Programme in Biogeosciences is the result of the integration of two disciplines of the Natural Sciences: Biology and Geology. Its title reflects the emergence of new fields of research located at the border between these two branches of knowledge. Without renouncing to the formation of researchers in the fields of study that belong to the PhD Programmes that preceeded it, this PhD Programme in Biogeosciences aims at developing new interdisciplinary areas that are the result of an integral approach to the knowledge of natural and human terrestrial systems.

The goal of the programme is to educate a new generation of PhDs in fields that are extremely important for society due to their implications in the environment, sustainable development and the quality of life. The different lines of research involved in the program cover aspects such as the maintenance of biodiversity, the quality of waters and the atmosphere, the safe storage of residues, bioremediation, climate change, the sustainable exploitation of resources and the evaluation and prediction of natural risks. All of these aspects constitute a challenge for society and the industry in Europe and the rest of the world. The key issues are multidisciplinary, so they demand the collaboration of Biology, Geology, Geochemistry, Ecology, Hydrology and Engineering. The creation of solutions requires a strong collaborative effort between the academia, the industry and the different public institutions to educate the future generations of professionals and researchers.

The PhD Programme in Biogeosciences is part of the strategy for R&D&i of the University of Oviedo, of which a key element is the Cluster of Energy, the Environment and Climate Change.
